"This record is one of shear beauty. The Music is passionate, romantic and
in some ways different in a very nice way than any other Kip project to date ...
accessable and frightfully close to perfection." - Jeff Lynch |
"SILVANA DELUIGI This Argentinian singer has bent tango to the purposes of a modern, wide-ranging musician, with the help of the producer Kip Hanrahan. On her first album, "Yo!" (American Clave), a pan-American band of tango and jazz musicians has been assembled around her, including the pianist Pablo Ziegler, the drummer Robby Ameen and the bassist Steve Swallow. While they touch on tradition with the popular classic "Cuesta Abajo," made famous by Carlos Gardel, as well as a tango nuevo Astor Piazzolla piece. But they had the bright idea of going beyond Argentina as well. A version of "Te Amo," by the Brazilian songwriter Chico Buarque, is shatteringly good slow, deep, and rhythmically loose."
- Ben Ratliff, The New York Times "[Deluigi's] astonishing US debut album is a rethinking of tango that recasts the genre into a beast as dark, sexy and subversive as it has ever been. ...Yo! is a beguiling treat, by runs soothing, ominous and erotic... Alone or in the talented crowd of musicians that play on Yo!, Deluigi proves herself to be a performer capable of amazing restraint and devastating beauty" - John Seroff, JazzTimes "...Deluigi's seductive understanding of tango haunts the brain and stirs the soul." - Fred Bouchard, Downbeat "...Deluigi is a singer of potent emotional substance... [Yo!] is a superlative manifesto for tango that doesn't stand in splendid isolation, but rather welcomes the new idiomatic possibilities arising from a dangerous liaison with western music. Piazzolla would have dug it's sly, salty charm." - Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise "...Yo! is an impressive work of fragile pride and remarkable clarity. Fernando Paz and Alfredo Triffs violins trace out exquisite melodies, Robby Ameens percussion is skeletal while Walter Castro and Haracio Romos bandoneons are opulent with latent passion. Deluigis voice is by turns beseeching, hoarse, swooning, humble and confident. "Sonamos El Tango" is quintessential Hanrahan material: filmic, pensive, passionate, but understated with the leaders spoken narrative feeling as though it were delivered to each listener individually. Yo!s gift is music redolent of rich shadows, dark experience and unexpected joy." - Colin Buttimer, Signal To Noise Magazine |
